When In Trouble, Use Simple Bowling Basics

Updated 10/5/2020

If you are a 175 average bowler or less, learn to rely on simple bowling basics if you get into trouble with your game.

Everyone gets out of rhythm or out of a good timing sequence, which causes errant bowling ball deliveries. The bowlers who can get back to good bowling fundamentals to put their games back in order quickest are those who will enjoy success on the lanes in league or tournament play.

Forcing the action is one culprit which can adversely affect your game. As humans, we are subject to rushing ourselves in pressured situations. We tend to try so hard and use unnecessary muscle tension in an effort to work our bowling ball into the pocket that we lose effectiveness.

Instead of continuing with a loss of perception and poor deliveries, focus on the fundamentals to your physical game to bolster your strengths and to reduce overall weaknesses.

Any successful coach (or coaching school), past or present, always develops an organized process or structure for students to practice. The practice structure generally uses just a few simple keys so the bowler can adapt quickly in competition and get back into stride.

Prepare your own checklist with a few physical components critical to your game, so you may work on these keys during practice sessions and feel confident to apply them during competition.

First, check your set-up position, your stance on the approach, and make sure you have good knee flex and your bowling shoulder is not lower than you intend.

Second, make sure you begin your first step and the beginning of your arm swing cycle slowly and smoothly to avoid quick and jerky starts to each. You want to experience a smooth and synchronized beginning to your approach.

Third, make certain your footwork maintains a steady pace each step. Do not rush your final two steps and be sure to walk your line. Keep a steady head throughout your approach.

Fourth, make certain your forward swing is close to your upper body and on line with your intended target path each delivery.

Finally, make a smooth bowling delivery with an accelerated and full follow-through swing motion toward your intended sighted target.

You may add your own tips as a reminder to help you return to good bowling form. If you build and rely on your own bowling checklist, you will trust your adjustments during competition.

We hope these tips help and encourage you to develop your own practice plan of action. Trust your bowling basics and get your game into shape.
