Your Bowling Tempo

Your bowling steps and swing movements together create your bowling tempo and timing sequence.

The best way to develop good timing is to bowl using your natural pace of movements.

Everyone has a different “internal motor,” so to state.

Using this natural pace of movements has advantages in that you can be yourself, bowl at your own pace once you begin your approach, and as a result, you can repeat quality deliveries.

If you are able to coordinate the pace of your steps with the natural pace of your swing cycle, you will achieve consistent timing.

With good timing comes consistency in making quality shots.

Therefore, it pays to develop a pace of swing and steps movement which are synchronized and move fluidly.

Although there are reasonable limits to any physical movement in sports, it is always to your advantage to bowl using your natural rhythm.

If, however, you must alter your natural pace of movement slightly to get the best match with your steps to your swing, it will be well worthwhile in the long run.

As example, if you tend to move so quickly and dart around in normal movements away from the lanes, you might want to slow your bowling movements just a bit so you can avoid rushing and forcing your swing and release.

The same holds true for overly methodical bowlers who control each movement and use excessive muscle tension by doing so.

The strategy is to establish a sound pre-shot routine and take a moment before stepping onto the approach for any given shot and visualize how you wish to deliver the bowling ball and where your aim point will be located.

A visualization process helps you organize your thoughts and feel the tempo by which you wish to walk and swing your bowling ball before actually doing so.

On the practice lanes you work on developing a good approach tempo and steps-to-swing timing relationship.

In competition, you must trust your movements and this is when using the pre-shot routine to prepare you for each shot becomes valuable.

Another factor involved with using a reliable pre-shot routine is allowing time to breath in and out slowly to relax your body muscles to trigger so every shot using smooth and fluid movements. This routine of preparing to bowl tension free is the perfect antidote for rising anxieties and stresses competition presents. Your pre-shot routine prepares you to bowl but it is your bowling tempo and the timing of your movements which produce the physical results you seek.
