Tune-Up Your Bowling Following Competition

By: bowlingball.com, 9/6/16

As an advanced player and one who regularly competes in leagues and tournaments, it is important to tune-up your bowling following competition.

It is key to your ongoing success in bowling to tune your game after you bowl in meaningful competition.

If your league or leagues are highly competitive, then you can use your weekly practice sessions to tune your game.

The same holds for tournaments you bowl and that is to get back to the practice lanes following these events and tune your game to what you have proven over time to be your best.

The chief reason why it is important to tune your game after you bowl in competition is that you may be forced to vary from your normal techniques with your physical game to adjust to the competitive conditions.

As example, if you must adjust your ball speed or loft distance, you may have to use techniques which are not ones you use normally in the comfort of your best bowling style.

You may have to play challenging lane conditions from angles of attack differing from bowling on familiar league or practice oil patterns. This is true quite often when you bowl tournaments.

Any changes you make to your best physical game when bowling in competition can throw off your regular bowling motion if you do not get back to the practice lanes and tune your game.

Tuning your game varies with each bowler’s preference. In general, you may wish to double check a few key areas of your physical game such as your swing and release. Your overall tempo of steps and swing are also items you may wish to check and tune to what you do normally and best.

If you have already established a practice plan, then likely you will tune your game during your practice time. It is recommended by many experienced coaches to practice and tune your game before bowling in your next meaningful competition.

It is risky to assume that your game will fall into place automatically each time to prepare to bowl. It is also recommended to practice the physical game adjustments you use during competition which vary from your best game so they are ready to use, if needed. End each practice session by using your “best stuff” and bowl a few minutes trying to strike and converting spares with the same passion you encounter when bowling in meaningful competition. Practice means to rehearse all aspects of your game, not only your best physical game techniques.
