Simple Bowling Footwork Tips

By: bowlingball.com, 10/5/16; Updated: 4/23/2024

If you are averaging 165 or less, spend some time on the practice lanes and use one or more of the following simple bowling footwork tips for improving your game and in developing balance and tempo when you bowl:

*Use your natural length walking stride.

*Your pace of steps should be a smooth walking motion to the foul line with a slight heel-to-toe action leading into your sliding step.

*Develop a slight increase in pace with successive steps.

*Walk at a pace you can easily replicate each time to bowl.

*Your sliding step should glide into the approach with most of your weight balanced on the ball of your sliding foot initially and then your weight transfers evenly distributed on your sliding heel and sole of your bowling shoe.

*Use a slight amount of knee flex from your stance position throughout your approach.

*Allow your sliding leg to flex at the knee slightly more than previous steps so the big muscles of your sliding leg promote good balance while you release your bowling ball.

*Walk your intended path and slide on a predetermined board at the foul line.

*Limit the amount of drift with your steps, either to the left or to the right, to about two boards from the initial set-up alignment unless otherwise instructed by your bowling coach.

*Use the same walking path technique regardless of where you align on the approach for strike or spare deliveries.

Retaining an athletic posture from start to finish in your approach is another factor to help you develop good footwork. Retaining a good spine angle as you walk and swing your ball is another key in developing balance and consistent walking tempo. Keep your head as motionless as possible during your approach to also aid with good balance as you release your bowling ball.
