Improve Your Bowling Spare Shooting

If you are a new or low average player trying to improve your bowling spare shooting, there are several simple tips or techniques which can help you right away:

*Use a plastic ball for spare shooting, particularly when going cross lane where the ball may hook away too soon causing you to miss the corner pin spare.

*Plastic bowling balls favor slow ball speed players.

*Do not expect high ball speed players to get a strong ball reaction using a plastic ball.

*Keep your eyes focused on your aim point and make sure to follow through the same direction your ball travels.

*Seek a reliable system for adjusting to spares located in various positions on the pin deck. If you presently have no system, seek advice from an experienced bowling instructor who knows the local lane conditions and can watch you practice your spare shooting to make sure you do the right things giving yourself the best chances at success.

*Align the front portion of your bowling shoulder with your aim point. Maintain this shoulder alignment throughout your approach and delivery movements.

*Walk your lines from every position on the approach when shooting spares. If you walk in a perfectly straight line for strikes, do the same for any spare even if you must move laterally across the approach floor and face the spare.

*The closer the spare is to the center of the lane, your adjustment is less than spares located on the corners of the pin deck.

*Spares on the left, move right. Spares on the right, move left.

*Use the old, reliable 3-6-9 system for adjusting to spares until you develop a slightly more advanced adjustment system.

Move either 3 boards, 6 boards, or 9 boards left or right depending where the spare is located in relation to the center of the lane.

Use your strike aim point at all spares with this basic 3-6-9 spare system.

Spare shooting is a vital part of the competitive game. Consult with an experienced instructor to learn more about aligning to spares. Developing a reliable system for adjusting to any spare on the lane, using a ball which gives you consistent control, and walking your lines and swinging your ball toward your target are important tips for successful spare shooting. Challenge yourself to improve your spare skills and watch your scores improve.
