By familiarizing yourself with how to use the Perfect Scale® bowling ball feature, you can simply streamline the bowling ball selection process. Here is how it works:

Just click on the Perfect Scale® (PS) button at the top of our home page and then on the image of the portion of the PS lane graph to view bowling balls that fall into the PS range you seek. As example, if you click on the yellow portion of the scale for very dry lane conditions, your will see a new page appear on your screen with bowling ball options matching the hook potential rating for those lane conditions. Any of the ball options will match well but you should click on the image of any ball of choice to further review description details, product availability, information about extended warranties, and about the price of the item.

Because each manufacturer uses a different method for indicating a given bowling ball's hook potential, bowlingball.com developed a way for the consumer to compare bowling balls across all manufacturers product lines. The result is the Perfect Scale®. Our goal is simply to make it easier for our customers to compare products and feel confident in the purchase selection process.

The PS ranges from a rating of "1-300" with plastic balls rated with a very low hook potential of "5." The highest number achieved on the scale is about "225." As you can tell, we have left room for improvement on our scale in anticipation of new technologies that possibly will result in accelerated hook potential ratings. In fact, most manufacturers are forced to alter their existing scales as their products change over time.


The PS uses mathematical formulas along with the manufacturers current scale to arrive at a uniform and comparable number. The PS allows you to compare products on hook potential ratings but you should also factor in your own bowling ability, additional bowling ball characteristics provided in the ball description, and the lane oil conditions at your local bowling centers, all of which are also factors that may slightly alter the hook potential ratings.
