How Can I Apply Spin On My Bowling Ball?

If you are a new bowler asking how can I apply spin on my bowling ball, then the answer can easily lie with a football.

That’s right, a football.

Place a football on the palm of your hand with your hand under the ball and with your fingers cocked slightly to the left (if you are a right handed bowler) and with your fingers on the laces of the football.

Visualize pitching the football underhanded and rotating your finger around from under the football to the outside of the football trying to toss an underhanded spiral pass to your friend.

Once you are able to deliver an underhanded spiral pass of the football consistently, then use the same type of delivery motion on your bowling ball.

The bowling ball needs to rest on the palm of your hand with your hand under the ball. With your fingers and thumb inserted in your bowling ball gripping holes, cock your wrist slightly as with the example of the football mentioned earlier, and release your ball by allowing your bowling fingers to quickly rotate to the outside of the ball as your hand reaches the bottom of your forward swing and as though you were trying to deliver an underhanded football spiral pass.

This technique which many of you have done with a football (likely in your youth) works well for placing “spin” on your bowling ball.

This term “spin” is more of tilted axis of rotation when your ball travels down the lane. This axis of rotation tilted down from an end-over-end rolling motion is what causes your ball to hook.

There are numerous articles published on this site discussing bowling ball motion. If you want a simple visualization technique, however, to learn how to apply spin and rev-up your bowling ball, try this tip next time you practice bowling.

It always helps to make a release change with a good instructor watching you as you learn to apply a new delivery motion on your bowling ball.

Under the watchful eye of a good coach, you can quickly learn how to hook your ball like experienced bowlers do and improve your control and pin action.
