Bowling Tempo Vs. Timing

Bowling tempo vs. timing is best compared by first understanding what each element specifically refers to in the game.

Tempo is the word or term typically used to discuss the pace of movement of your steps or bowling swing.

Timing is the word or term typically used to discuss the relationship of the steps and swing movements in relation to one another.

Some bowlers use a slow pace of steps and swing movements while others a faster pace of both movements.

Your pace of motion must be controllable and natural with the intent to repeat each movement in a like manner easily and for as long as your session on the lanes lasts.

If you visualize what the word “smooth” means and feels to you, that likely will be very close to the pace of movement each component of your game will follow.

If you can walk with good body balance repeatedly and swing your ball with the same tempo, then your bowling tempo will produce consistency in shotmaking.

If you coordinate and organize the movements of your steps matching to your swing tempo and begin the sequence of steps and swing at the same relative moment to one another each time you bowl, then you will produce your personal individual timing sequence.

Some bowlers use what is known as a “late timing” sequence while others an “early timing” sequence.

There have been tremendously successful players for many decades using both late and early timing sequences.

To best determine which timing sequence suits your game, it is wise to use the services of an experience bowling instructor to do so.

A simple technique to tune your steps and swing is to bring your overall tempo to maximum movement power and then throttle back about 10% of your top speed.

Your goal is to repeat quality shots and in doing so, your approach tempo and timing will fall into a consistency of motion.
