Bowling Tempo, Balance, And Spares

As simple as it may seem, bowling tempo, balance, and spares are three keys to improving your game.

If you are stuck in a bowling rut and cannot raise your average or approach bowling closer to your true ability, then work on these three simple parts of the game.

*Tempo - Count cadence. When walking to the foul line and swinging your bowling ball, count the pace of each step to ensure you are not moving more slowly than when you bowl your best or moving faster than when you are at your best.

Hurrying your steps beyond your normal bowling pace is the most frequent cause of poor tempo. Fast steps lead to forcing your swing and release.

Pace yourself each shot so you can repeat the same speed of steps and swing over and over until it becomes habit.

*Balance - Retain the same spine angle throughout your approach, slide, and when you release your bowling ball.

Establish a solid athletic posture in your set-up and keep your spine angle constant all the way through your approach movements so you can hold your form at the line well after your ball is delivered.

*While walking, keep your head as motionless as possible. This tip helps you stabilize your upper body and retain good balance, particularly during the critical moment of releasing your ball.

*Spares - Avoid overlooking routine spares. Make a firm commitment to converting spares, especially the routine spares you leave most often. Reduce the number of open frames by paying attention to every spare and do this by remaining tension free and keeping your nerves under control.

Although these tips seem like simplistic, they are the cornerstone in developing consistency and accuracy.

During competition it is unnecessary to think too deeply about each physical movement you make. Instead, monitor your approach tempo while striving for good balance. It is the small things which can turn your game around quickly if you learn to identify which keys trigger your game back into form. Bowling is a game of timing where your steps should be matched with your swing pace of movement. By repeating the same movements each shot, your physical game becomes consistent and then your lane play adjustments will work well. OH, and don’t forget to make deposits in your spare bank!
