Bowling Rhythm

If you wish to improve your game, then establish a consistent bowling rhythm.

When you are in rhythm, you can control your bowling ball speed, skid distance and your ball reaction.

Visualize that you are bowling on a lane tilted about 40 degrees uphill. With this uphill tilt, your job of keeping your feet moving at a consistent pace becomes a struggle.

Also, keeping your ball speed up suffers a bit because you cannot walk as quickly as on a level lane and, therefore, your steps and your swing slows, possibly decelerating.

To keep up your ball speed, you have to use excessive force just to get your ball propelled at your normal bowling speed. The notion of bowling uphill then becomes highly undesirable.

Now, visualize bowling on a lane which is tilted downward about 40 degrees. In this case, your feet would tend to hurry and your slide step would increase in pace due to increased pace of preceding steps that you likely would hurry your forward swing and lose balance and control.

In doing so, your arm swing will increase its pace of movement too much that the timing of your release would be adversely affected. You would suffer a loss of body balance to a point that your slide step becomes very unstable and inconsistent.

With this, your ball speed control changes unpredictably and so will your ball skid distance.

What we learn here is bowling with a super slow pace of movement causes a breakdown in the pace of your swing and steps leading to ineffective shots. Bowling at an accelerated pace of movement causes an excess of speed in your steps and swing leading to ineffective shots.

However, when you bowl on a level approach and lane surface, you must certainly agree that your task of moving your steps at a consistent pace, swinging your bowling ball at a consistent pace, and delivering your ball at a consistent time each shot is much, much easier to do than when bowling on your imagined uphill and downhill lanes.

So why must it be so difficult to regulate your own pace of steps and swing? Why must it be difficult to deliver your ball at a controllable and effective speed time after time?

With good ball speed control, you gain in ball skid distance control, in a reliable overall ball reaction, can make intelligent alignment decisions so you hit the pocket repeatedly, and you do not have to use excessive force in delivering your bowling ball.

Another factor in tuning your bowling rhythm is to stay in balance. By using an athletic body posture and reducing wasted movement with your upper body while walking and swinging your bowling ball, your balance improves. If you visualize bowling this way, imagine bowling with zero head movement further helping to stabilize your approach, sliding with exceptional body balance, and making very accurate shots time after time. Establish good bowling rhythm and become a much more consistently performing player.
