Bowling Focus

Bowling focus can be defined as a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity.

Focus also relates the distance from a focal point to a corresponding principal plane.

In bowling, to focus on your physical game means to encompass or coordinate all aspects of movements while walking, swinging, and releasing your bowling ball.

Focus also implies total concentration on a sight target or an aim point on the lane for the purpose of directionally delivering your bowling ball along a specific path.

Consider focus in bowling as a burst of attention where you mentally monitor your body motion and where you wish for your ball to travel.

The remainder of the total time you are bowling in a given session can be used to concentrate on preparing for your next shot and precisely how you wish to execute that shot.

Concentration is your involvement in all aspects of your bowling session such as playing the lanes, how you plan to release the ball and where, the tempo at which you bowl, your balance and posture, and so on.

Your focus is an instantaneous burst of attention on a single aspect of your game such as hitting a specific aim point or releasing your bowling ball at a key moment relative to your swing plane.

A state of concentration surrounds your entire session on the lanes and it requires practice. The ability to concentrate on any part of your game in making good shots requires practice because it is not easy to turn on or off your powers of concentration at will for an extended period of time.

It is not easy to concentrate fully on the game for two or three hours.

You must first develop an ability to relax between frames and mentally monitor your game plan. This process helps to avoid “burn out” by thinking too hard and too long about your game.

Instead trust your skills and abilities to make good shots at the time you must do so.

Once you prepare to step onto the approach as part of your “pre-shot routine”, it is then time to move to a focus mode and allow your physical game motion to converge with your bowling ball being delivered at your precise aim point.

Think of your focus as laser beams or rays converging on your sight target on the lane.

The mental game, therefore, has various aspects of awareness and brain involvement.

Using energies to apply your mental powers in preparing to bowl and in the moment you actually bowl are skills top tier players develop and use in competition.

Another factor involving bowling focus is awareness of the changing environment during competitive sessions. As example, the lanes will change due to linage and the oil breakdown. Because of this, you must adjust accordingly. Trusting your decision when to adjust and specifically what to adjust must come with commitment to your decision. Commitment to adjusting and regaining a reliable ball reaction is a talent developed over time through experience and with a thorough knowledge of your game.
