As a bowler serious about improving your game, develop a feel for a precise bowling ball moment of release.

Your accuracy will improve if you learn to control the point at, or nearly at, the bottom of your forward swing arc when you release the ball from your hand.

A disciplined release is a technique any highly skilled bowler develops. It is an essential part of the game for gaining a good ball reaction and for “reading” the lanes.

Release means “let go!” In our case, let go of your bowling ball at the same time relative to your sliding bowling shoe as consistently as you can.

If you develop a repeatable release technique, you control your bowling ball skid distance.

By controlling your bowling ball skid distance, you take a big step to also control your overall ball reaction.

By controlling your ball reaction, your job of aligning to the pocket and spares becomes an easy process.

When the ball exits your hand, it must do so as close to the same time each successive shot. Your thumb should lead the fingers slightly in exiting the ball. This technique describes regulating the moment of release.

You can think of the moment of release as a trigger movement.

Your thumb exits the ball slightly before your fingers apply a rotational movement. The rotational movement of your fingers produces the rotation of axis and tilt applied to your bowling ball.

If your moment of release varies too much, that is to state that if your trigger movement releases the ball late one time and early another, your finger rotational movement also varies as does loft distance and the ball skid distance control will also vary accordingly.

The moment of release, therefore, is critical to producing a consistent ball skid distance and gaining a reliable ball reaction.

A factor which can assist you in developing the feel you need to release your ball on time is a consistent swing tempo. By establishing a good swing tempo, your job of governing your ball speed at the moment the ball leaves your hand becomes a doable task. Synchronize the the speed of your steps with your swing pace and your job establishing ball speed control becomes easy. This speed control notion is also connected to controlling your ball skid distance.
