Bowling And Breathing

When bowling where you sense some tension creeping upon you, use a time tested bowling and breathing tip to help you relax.

Every bowler most likely has heard of or thought about taking a few deep breaths before stepping onto the approach when they feel nervous.

If you are a bowler who gets a bit anxious before and during competition, try one additional breathing tip.

Here is the simple and recommended process:

*Take a deep breath or two before you take your stance position on the approach. Exhale slowly.

*While setting up to bowl on the approach, take one more deep breath and exhale until about half of your lungs are filled to capacity.

*Hold your breath until you walk and deliver your bowling ball.

Avoiding breathing in more air as you walk and swing your bowling ball will tense your muscles as if you were bracing for impact or some form of collision.

Instead, hold your breath with perhaps half air capacity in your lungs until you have released your ball.

By doing this, you reduce risk of tightening your arm, neck and shoulder muscles before releasing your ball.

Also, by holding your breath, you reduce the risk of pulling up and out of your shot or lunging forward with your head and shoulders as you are in the act of releasing your ball.

Reducing unneeded body motion while you walk, swing, and release your bowling ball are vital keys to consistency in the game. Breathing in and out slowly and then holding your breath with half air capacity in your lungs is a technique proven to work.

There are other factors which influence stability when making critical shots. One key is to
think about a good start to your approach and then a good finish. Between, focus sharply on your selected target on the lane. Next, focus on making one good bowling shot at a time. Don’t get ahead of yourself but rather remain in the present and think about making one good delivery. Also, keep your tempo consistent relating to your swing and footwork. Finally, stay in balance and hold your form at the foul line after releasing the bowling ball.
