Bowl Within Your Skill Set

By: bowlingball.com
Publish Date: 7/8/15

This article is intended for top tier players not competing on professional tours.

No bowler in history has ever mastered the game entirely. Successful players resist exceeding their own physical game limitations when facing stiff competition or when bowling on challenging lane conditions.

The key is to be aware of your limitations and perform within your range of effectiveness.

As example, if you are not a power player with a high rev-rate and with a great deal of ball speed, avoid the temptation to “jack up” your release trying to muster up maximum revs, particularly on competitive lane conditions.
Trust your game skills and stick with your best delivery style when under pressure.

You might be a bowler who relies on slow and steady footwork.

If so, avoid overly increasing the pace of your steps in anticipation of delivering an important shot or to adding power when trying so hard to strike.

Focus on maintaining your natural tempo, even if you are nervous or if you are determined to make a great shot, when the chips are on the line.

Maintaining a consistent rhythm and staying in your own “wheelhouse”, as the saying goes, can be your best ally.

There exists the possibility that when you try to do more than you typically are trained to do, the results become less than you hope for which can lead to trouble during competition.

It is possible, to sharpen your skills by working with your instructor and through dedicated practice in preparation for competition.

Trust in your skills and use the tools you have developed when adjusting to challenging conditions. Avoid reaching for game adjustments you have yet to practice or ones where you are aware of but have no history using during stiff levels of competition.

Identify the strongest assets of your game and rely on those skills when bowling in pressure situations.

Pressure has a way of making us want to take chances and want to reach for the limits of our skill sets.

Avoid these temptations and focus instead on making one good shot at a time by trusting your game and your proven skills. Give yourself a chance to succeed.
