Bowl With Less Head Movement

Bowl with less head movement than you already do will secure good body balance and reduce losing your spine angle as you release your bowling ball.

The great golfer, Jack Nicklaus, has been quoted as saying “swing around a steady head and you will play good golf.”

The same notion works well in bowling also. Avoid any unnecessary head movement while walking and swinging your bowling ball.

Head movement happens in various ways. When you focus with precision on your aim point on the lane, this should help keep your head movement to a minimum.

Avoid abruptly bending at the waist and surging your head in front of your knees as you enter your slide step. This head sudden movement can cause you to lean forward and lose your intended ball delivery path into the lane surface altering skid distance control.

Tilting your head sideways and increasing how much your bowling shoulder is lowered leads to a loss of balance during the critical moment you release your ball.

By keeping your head motionless as you walk, you can easily focus your eyes on your aim point on the lane.

Some head movement is likely going to happen but if you strive to walk with your chin even with your shoulders or slightly above shoulder level, you will improve your chances of having good body balance while you bowl.

Set up with an athletic posture and allow your chin to remain at shoulder level throughout your approach to secure good balance. It may be helpful to video record your approach to see just how much or how little you are moving your head during your approach.

Another factor for good balance is to avoid bouncing as you walk. Bouncing causes your head to change elevation from the floor in successive steps. In doing so, you may lose your posture during your slide. Ideally, if only your legs and arm swinging your bowling ball were the only moving parts during your approach, you would achieve simplification and reduce chances of losing balance and making errant shots. The key to this simplification in movement is to relax your body muscles before starting your approach. Seek good approach tempo and body stability to achieve good scores.
