As New Bowler, What Equipment Should I Really Buy?

By: bowlingball.com, 11/23/15

So you ask as a new bowler, what equipment should I really buy?

The answer is fairly simple:

* bowling ball
* bowling shoes
* bowling bag
* bowling towel
* wrist support device (optional)

Before discussing these items, it is highly recommended as a new bowler to take at least one bowling lesson, if not a series of lessons, from a qualified instructor before going too far in the game.

Learning the important physical fundamentals of making a good approach and bowling ball delivery are key to progressing in the game quickly.

Take a lesson, learn the game and develop sound skills so you can enjoy the game for many years to come. Try to avoid cutting corners to save a few dollars, if possible.

Regarding a new bowling ball, the idea is to start with an entry level ball so you can learn accuracy and the art of picking up spares.

A plastic ball or an entry level urethane ball are both inexpensive, allow for a controllable hook once you learn a proper release technique, and allow you to get a pro shop professional to custom fit the ball to your hand.

Bowling shoes give you stability, a consistent sliding capability, and can offer both comfort and style.

Rent shoes provided at your local bowling center never really fit properly and are used by other bowlers many, many times before you use them. Get your own bowling shoes right away.

Naturally, you will need a bowling bag to tote your equipment in and out of the bowling center. Bags are relatively inexpensive and are available in a variety of colors and styles. Some bags are equipped with roller wheels and retractable handles for ease in rolling the bag in and out of the bowling center. Other bags are equipped with a shoulder strap to carry the bag over your shoulder as you walk.

A bowling towel is a useful item to wipe away lane oil and dirt from your hands after picking up and bowling with your new ball. You can use the towel to wipe off lane oil or smudges from the ball surface before each delivery.

A wrist support device functions as a prop to the back of your hand and will key your bowling thumb to exit the ball consistently and cleanly. An on time release helps you control your ball skid distance and helps you deliver the accurately toward your target down the lane.

Wrist support devices are optional accessory items, of course, and should be discussed with your instructor or pro shop professional as they watch you bowl and help you learn to release your new ball effectively.

Spend a little money from the onset of your bowling endeavor and take a lesson to learn the game the right way. You will enjoy your time on the lanes owning your own gear and knowing how to bowl to score well.
