A Timely Bowling Ball Release

If you are striving to be an improved bowler, learn the importance of a timely bowling ball release.

In short, develop a feel for a precise moment of release.

Your accuracy will improve if you learn to control the point where you release your bowling ball.

This point is the very moment your hand exits your ball relative to your forward swing movement.

It is advised to release the ball at, or nearly at, the bottom of your forward swing arc.

It helps to think of examples of a very early release and a very late release to best understand the notion of a timely point of release.

If, as example, you were to let your bowling ball leave your hand just as you began your downswing, the ball would certainly bounce downward onto the approach floor behind the foul line and any chance of gaining a controllable ball reaction would be lost.

As another example, think of you hanging onto the ball far too long as your hand swings upward near your sliding knee cap and goes airborne about 6 feet or perhaps more before crashing onto the lane surface.

This example would also ruin any chances at your being an accurate player and one who can control the ball reaction.

With these extreme and unwanted examples, it is easy to understand that pinpointing the best moment for your hand to exit your bowling ball consistently is when the ball travels slightly beyond the foul line and enters the lane surface at a gradual angle of descent.

If you develop a technique allowing you to consistently release your ball on time relative to your forward swing reaching the bottom of arc movement, your chances at controlling your ball skid distance and ball speed improve greatly.

Another simple factor to use related to your moment of release is to apply consistent hand gripping pressure on your bowling ball throughout your entire swing cycle. If you avoid squeezing the ball or grabbing at the ball with a sudden grasping motion just as you prepare to let it go, you also avoid the risk of releasing the ball at an improper time. Forcing your release to gain power or “revs” is not a good method of controlling your ball skid distance and speed off of your bowling hand. Learn to to use a timely bowling ball release and enjoy the benefits of improved accuracy and ball motion.
