A Loose Swing, Smooth Steps, And A Firm Bowling Wrist

A good formula for getting your game back on track is a loose swing, smooth steps, and a firm bowling wrist.

Keeping it simple is what most bowlers want. Simplicity in bowling is tying together important elements of the game so they can work in unison toward a positive end.

If we break down each of these three keys to your game, developing a loose, unforced swing movement would certainly be at or near the top of any bowler’s list.

When you use little or no muscle tension in your arm while walking and swinging your bowling ball, you give yourself every chance to repeat good swings, control your desired bowling ball speed, and be in position to make your release on time and effectively.

Your chief transportation mechanism to the foul line are your steps. When you make smooth steps, two positive things occur.

Smooth steps indicate a consistent tempo when walking and swinging your ball. Smooth steps also means that you are not charging to the foul line and not forcing your release.

Using a firm wrist technique when swinging your bowling ball in preparation for making the delivery can be an asset in making repeatable shots. Repeating good shots is the benchmark of gaining a reliable ball reaction.

Set your wrist position when holding the ball in your stance and retain a firm wrist to throughout your entire swing cycle.

A firm wrist prevents excessive wobbling and collapsing of your wrist before your hand reaches the release point at, or very nearly at, the bottom of your forward swing.

If you are a bowler who tends to “figure eight” your wrist as you swing the ball, keeping a firm wrist will help minimize any excessive or unneeded wrist motion during your swing and will help trigger your thumb exiting the ball at the precise moment intended for an effective release.

The combination of using a loose swing, smooth steps, and a firm bowling wrist is certainly a recipe for consistency in shotmaking.

Another key to releasing your ball consistently is to avoid squeezing your ball by suddenly increasing gripping pressure when beginning your downswing and when you are preparing to release the ball. Grabbing at the ball implies you may be trying to apply more power to your release than you do routinely or perhaps do effectively and the results can lead to errant shots. Maintain a consistent fluidity to your overall swing motion and avoid forcing your swing or release. In doing so, watch your ball reaction improve.
