If you are striving to improve your game regardless of your average or experience level, avoiding certain bowling pitfalls is advisable.

Using skills and time invested in practice are keys to improvement. Bowling intelligently goes a long way toward making progress with your game.

Here are a few areas of the game to avoid:

*Random practice with no specific focus on important keys to your game can be a road to nowhere. Use your practice time wisely. Develop a practice plan even if this means working only on one key aspect of your game. You absolutely can work on more parts of your game each practice session but do so one at a time.

*Avoid adjustments you are unfamiliar with and untested in using. Use adjustments to your game or make equipment changes in competition only if you have practiced implementing these changes.

*Trust your decisions and judgement in competition. As example, alignment and physical game adjustments are important decisions to make. Once you decide which adjustment gives you the best chance to regain a dependable ball reaction, trust your decision. If you are well practiced using given adjustments, avoid hesitation implementing these changes if you believe them to be the best course of immediate action.

*Work on the best elements of your physical “A-Game” during practice time. Unless you practice each of your strongest techniques, you risk losing efficiency when bowling in competition.

Practice time helps you build your game. In competition, you must trust your game.

*Keep your bowling ball equipment prepared and ready for use. Bowling ball surfaces are very important parts in gaining a reliable ball reaction. Not developing and using a routine ball surface maintenance strategy impedes gaining a reliable ball reaction when you need it most.

*Avoid stubbornness. If you see a poor ball reaction when you just delivered a good shot, avoid telling yourself you can throw the ball better next shot. This is a good example of trust. Use an adjustment or a ball change which you feel provides your best chances at recovering a dependable ball reaction.

The bottom line in avoiding certain bowling pitfalls is developed through purposeful practice. Organize your practice sessions. Use your time and invested resources wisely.

The bowling pitfalls to avoid are generally ones resulting from not trusting your game skills and using adjustments you know have worked in the past. Trust is developed because you train properly and use all the keys to your game effectively. Training sessions imply practicing with a plan in mind so when you face the challenges of competition next, you can perform to your expectations and bowl well. Avoid trying to do more than you know your game skills allow. Never allow competition to force you out of your skill range and game plan. Have confidence and avoid the looming pitfalls bowling can present.
