Big Finish Propels Florida’s Kristopher Prather into Teen Masters’ Boys High School Division Lead

RENO, Nev. – Closing games of 244 and 257 propelled Kristopher Prather of Milton, Fla., into the second round qualifying lead in the Boys High School division of the 14th annual Teen Masters at the National Bowling Stadium Monday.

Prather, who was third after Sunday’s six games on a long lane condition, finished with a 12-game total of 2,511 pins after six more games on a shorter oil pattern Monday. He held a 14-pin lead over fellow Floridian Cory Misura of Largo, Fla.

“I knew I had to move back to the right,” Prather said of the strategic move he made for the final two games. “I was trying to stay focused and not get too aggravated. I had to bowl the best I could, make quality shots and have fun.

“I usually do better, and like bowling more, on the short patterns, but for some reason I just matched up better on the long yesterday.”

Prather, who will enroll as a freshman at Wichita State University this fall, is bowling in his fourth Teen Masters. He finished 11th in 2009.

In the Girls High School division, Thea Aspiras of Chesapeake, Va., retained her lead with a 2,519 total, racing away from second-place Natalie Goodman, O'Fallon, Ill., who finished 187 pins behind with a 2,332 total for 12 games.

“I enjoy bowling on both the long and short conditions, so it doesn’t matter to me what I bowl on,” the future Norfolk State University freshman said. “I relax and don’t over think what I’m bowling on. I just bowl. All of the conditions are hard so it doesn’t matter. I just think positive whenever I’m on the lanes. I’m here to win and no one is going to stop me.”

Aspiras came into the Teen Masters after a sixth-place finish in the United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships last week in Indianapolis.

Greg Young of Viera, Fla., took over the Boys 14-Under lead with 2,466 pins, 81 pins better than Jeffrey Juarez of East Meadow, N.Y. Chevelle Holstein of Sparks, Nev., was the Girls 14-Under leader with a 2,147 total, 38 pins ahead of Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif.

Qualifying in the Teen Masters concludes Tuesday morning when the top one-third of the male bowlers and top one-third of the female bowlers bowl a third qualifying round on a “mixed” lane condition where one lane will use a short oil pattern and the other lane will use long oil. The top 32 High School and top 8 Under 14 players after 18 games – regardless of gender – will advance in the head-to-head single-elimination match play finals Tuesday afternoon. High School players will bowl seven-game matches; Under 14 players will bowl five-game matches.

In addition to competing for scholarship prizes, two top players from the Teen Masters will join two players selected from the Collegiate Masters in earning invitations to bowl alongside the best bowlers in the world in the 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling, Oct. 24-Nov. 6, at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
